Thank you for the suggestions Yelp land. Is Jimmy Corgan still lurking around Chi-town? Last I heard, he was delving deep into spoken word performance, as well as running into problems with his band (schwan) breaking apart.

Ellen "more runnish than runner" M. says:
I heard he moved from Chicago a few years ago because fans were sleeping in his yard. Not sure if that's true.
The last I heard about Billy was when Stephen Elliott (author living in San Francisco) interviewed him in front of a live audience. He read a few of his poems (Corgan's).
I think the band is/was "Zwan."

Thanks Fantasmo. I''ve never heard of any of those bands. The latest Chicago band that I have checked into is Wilco, but I think they've been around a while and are not *new*. I also used to be a fan of the Matador record label, but forgot about them when Liz Phair went pop. Actually I'm not a huge fan of Phair's new stuff...by any means.

Those sound like great bands. If you're looking to hear a good cover band- Wedding Banned is great! They dress up in 70's wedding attire and play all cover songs that you know and love to listen to.

Office is a lot of fun. Upbeat, new wavish stuff. Plus, there are 3 gals in the band, if you like to support women in rock. I know I do.

Heidi, how could I forget the redwalls! Yes, they are incredibly talented for their age. I can't wait to see what they do as they get older.

The CFO at my workplace is good friends with one of the guy's fathers (so I'm like, TOTALLY in with the band LOL). They are all really proud of the Redwalls.
haha That would be weird, having your parents refer to you by your band name.

Also, the as of now unnamed original band that I am forming with some friends. Sure, we don't have songs or gigs or anything, but we're good. REALLY good.

Check out Jackpot Donnie- they are GREAT. In fact they have a show this Wed. (2/6) at the Elbo Room.
http://www.myspace.com...The recipe for the full Jackpot Donnie experience calls for a full cup of hard rock, a dash of reggae, a splash of funk, and a heavy dose of scintillating melodies and powerful vocals - add more of any ingredient as necessary. Known for their ability to play to any room, they are establishing themselves as one of Chicago's up and coming live bands.

It's funny that someone mentioned the Changes...I actually know those guys.
I'm sure I've harped on this enough, but anything involving Ken Vandermark is worth more than the cost of admission.

The Changes are awesome. I went to school with Jonny. Dude can drum.

Lost Armada and Brave Ulysses -- these are the ex's bands, and although they're the OOMPH into the eventual demise of us, he's an amazing musician and his groups are pretty freaking rockin'.
Brave Ulysses got a write-up in the RedEye a few weeks ago, too. Rave reviews and things :)

Deanna M. says:
Matt, I primarily know Dave through my roommate. I know I've hung out with the other members, but I'm terrible with names.
My roommate needs to stop having hot friends.

If you're into the instrumental rock variety, I'd recommend both Pelican and Russian Circles.
