Five or six lady friends of mine take turns celebrating our birthdays.  We've been to Balthazar, Pastis, Schiller's Liquor Bar, Union Sq. Cafe, Spice Market and Lupa, all of which we've loved.  That's the type of restaurant we're looking for and I'd appreciate any recommendations of old or new lunch/brunch places to recommend.  Thanks so much.

Happy New Year!

I agree, Ninth Street Market is excellent for a Lower East Side spot, but NOTHING like the upscale places you cited.

Try Norma's (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) in the Parker Meridien.

I moved from NY a year ago and I know things change quickly there, but two of my favorites were: Noho Star at the corner of Bleeker and Lafayette and L'Orange Bleue on Broome St in Soho.

Just a couple of asides on Julie's Suggestions

Noho Star has excellent potato pancakes with caviar & creme and a kick-ass homemade ginger beer if you like that sort of thing.

Although I've never had a meal at L'Orange Bleue their desserts are great and on the weekend late nights they host a nice worldbeat party with sounds from West, North, and East  Africa. I used to love going here for drinks & boogie

Cheers

Well may be kind of late but Esperanto on 9th street and avenue C is perfect for brunch. For one the food is amazing and they also feature a live Brazilian music. You can not go wrong with this combination.

No, you're not at all late, Mario S.  I'm keeping a list of all of these recommendations and will go throught the year.  Next time one of my girlfriends asks for a suggestion about where to have the next birthday brunch, I'll be so cool with my (your) ideas.

Oh in that case Arlyne B, you can also recommend
Maroons - To die for Jamaican/Southern food. Make a reservation even for Brunch. www.maroonsnyc.com
"Its a Dominican Thing" - Excellent Carribean food (real heavy), it is rather small but worth it. It is on 19th btwn 6th and 7th avenue.

I like the $15 brunch at Essex that includes 3 bloody marys, mimosas or screwdrivers.  A reservation is a must unless you go after 3pm when things slow down.  It's at 120 Essex St in the LES.

Arlyne, just keep in mind that as good as a lot of these recommended places may be, they don't have the upscale ambiance of the type of place you said you prefer.

Another cozy spot for brunch, if you can bear the wait, is Prune on 1st St bet 1st and 2nd Aves.  Great brunch!  Excellent fruit salad, eggs and bloody marys...

If you haven't been to Sarabeth's yet, you might want to add that to the list.  It's sort of old skool, and not as downtown-hip as some of the other places on your list, but brunch at Sarabeth's is just. . . classic.
