Hi.

I'm from Boston and making my first trip out to San Diego in October. I'll be there the weekend of October 19th. I have no idea what to do when I'm out there. Here in Boston I go to art gallery receptions, restaurant/store openings, spa events and cool hip lounges. Any ideas would really be appreciated...

You'll probably enjoy La Jolla, it's chock full of art galleries along with restaurants and high end shops. I love the Morrison Hotel gallery, full of rock star photos, and the Fingerhut Gallery with it's collection of paintings by Dr Seuss.

There is an ambitous new lounge near downtown called Modus that you may want to check out. They also have late night dining.

Yes, Modus is really an innovative spot to check out; it's located in Banker's hills on 4th and Ivy.  Also,  Stingaree downtown is the new suave/hip lounge with cabanas upstairs and a very good restaurant.  You may want to meander through Little Italy and eat at one of the restaurants, as well.  La Jolla's La Valencia is a great spot for brunch on Sundays, drinks and food on any day.  I f you want to eat at a couple of good restaurants, I recommend Tapenade on Fay in La Jolla, a French restaurant with live Jazz, and La Dolce Vita for an Italian culinary escapade off Prospect.  The Sky Room at La Valencia is also a fancy treat with great food and a great view of La Jolla cove.  For cultural emancipation, check out Balboa Park with all its museums and interesting gardens.  Crush in Hillcrest is another cool restaurant with a fairly extensive wine bar.  For sushi,  I'd recommend Sushi Ota and zenbu in La Jolla.

Art galleries for non-western art: Molloy aboriginal Australian art and Africa & beyond; western contemporary/figurative: Jan gallery, all are located in La Jolla.  The Tasende gallery is worth peeking in but is rarely open.
