Michael E. says:
Old 97s "Too Far to Care" is a fantastic break-up album. Self-loathing, drunken longing in all of its beautiful twanginess.

Katie C. says:
ben lee's "running with scissors"...written after claire danes broke his heart

Mary C. says:
Annie Lennox, Bare. Covers so many of the phases you go through and her voice is, as always, superb.

Gabriel S. says:
Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. Nothing like a Leonard Cohen song sung by a guy who accidentally drowned three years later. Alcohol may intensify this effect.

Michelle d. says:
"Inconsolable" by Jonatha Brooke, on the "Plumb" CD

Oksana "Trouble!" T. says:
Uhm. I think its the worst thing to listen to a depressing tune when some idiot decides to drop your awsomeness due to their incapability to deal with themselves. SO, why keep yourself down when you can grab my super-short version of "Who cares?!" compilation that includes, but isn't limited to:
Ceasars Palace - Jerk It Out
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
These really should get him/her OUT of your head or heart or other places.
Otherwise, if its really bad, I kill myself with:
You Look So Fine by Garbage
Sour Times by Portishead

Michelle d. says:
"You Know, I Know, You Know" by Bleu (the singer is so hot, you'll forget about the dude or gal who broke yer heart.
And anything by Nick Drake, I'm serious. He'll put you in a trance, you can float asleep to him. Did you know he died of an overdose of antidepressants?

Crisa M. says:
"You Give Love a Bad Name" by Bon Jovi.
They rocked and still rock. I am not the only one thinking of this: "100,000,000 Fans Can't be Wrong". ....U2 who?

Jeff "I Turn My Camera On" S. says:
Hmm, how about something as obvious as "How Can YOu Mend A Broken Heart" by Al Green. The Blowers Daughter by Damien Rice is a good choice as well.

Deb "Try Harder" T. says:
I second Michelle's Bleu nomination and for those who love Jellyfish-esque power pop, would add basically half the songs off his album "Redhead."

Brandon B. says:
boyracer or maybe heavenly

Katherine W. says:
1. "Creep" by Radiohead: perfect self-loathing, though maybe trite
2. "Love Ridden" by Fiona Apple: details the minutae of breaking up
3. "Walk Away" by Ben Harper: good for the trying to be strong phase
4. "Song for the Dumped" by Ben Folds Five: amusingly bitter
5. "Cheers Darling" by Damien Rice: jealously bitter
03/21/2005
Michelle d. says:
Ben Folds & Ben Folds Five are two of my favorite bands in the world, I tell ya, the WORLD. And "Song for the Dumped" is very liberating when you want to get past the sad stage and work on your totally healthy anger stage. :)

trish c. says:
If ya in the heartbroken mood, try listening to songs by Rachael Yamagata "worn me down", "collide", "known for years"....

Stellah D. says:
Today, I was walking in the rain, and all of a sudden I started to smile, and I still am.. It might be time to start a list of songs that inspire optimism instead eh?
03/23/2005
Michelle d. says:
"Video" by India Arie; "California" by Joni Mitchell; "One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces" by Ben Folds Five; "I used to love him" by Lauren Hill (featuring Mary J Blige); "Papa Won't Leave You Henry" by Nick Cave; "You're the Top" as sung by Ella Fitzgerald; "More than a Woman" by Angie Stone; "Movin' Out" by Billy Joel; "32 Flavors" by Ani DiFranco, or the one by Alana Davis; (there's more than this, but I'd have to start charging a fee. ;)

Oksana "Trouble!" T. says:
Waking up dead is useless, for one, and is probably possible if I carried a chicken foot with me for good luck and chanted over dolls all night. But I don't. But here I go:
Nine Inch Nails - Piggy (very fun but oh so sad)
I found it on my pod a while ago, just didn't make it to the talk section on time.

Kevin S. says:
Nina Simone, Love Me or Leave Me..."I'd rather be lonely without you than happy with somebody else..." Love that song. Also, sappy as it is, I like the whole Forever Blue album by Chris Isaak, it's a good one when you are bummed. But that doesn't happen any more with the advent of the BF!
04/07/2005
Roopa D. says:
The Cure "Bloodflowers". Something about Robert Smith's voice makes you almost want to lay in your own misery aka feel sorry for yourself.
04/07/2005
Katie B. says:
Beck -- all of Sea Change -- but especially "Lost Cause..."
04/07/2005
Michael T. says:
If you like a devil-may-care snicker up the sleeve to go with your blues, you can't go wrong with troubadour-of-the-down&out Tom Waits and his "Bad Liver & A Broken Heart." "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."
04/08/2005
Michelle d. says:
Michael T - I LOVE the way you play with words. "troubadour of the down&out" - brilliant! Okay, I need to start a fan club for you. I'm serious.

Kevin S. says:
"I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls. Wait, that's the song I would have them play if I were coming up to bat for the Giants. OK, "I Hate Myself for Loving You" by Joan Jett.
04/18/2005
Hog F. says:
"Tear Stained Eye" from Son Volt
I'm not sure if it's about lost love, tho.
04/18/2005
Michelle d. says:
Oh, I LOVE Son Volt. Hog Fojtik, you rock!
"Mystify Me" by Son Volt is also good.
04/18/2005
Michelle d. says:
EVERYBODY - so who's going to make a compilation CD of all these songs for us????
04/18/2005
I Q. says:
You are not kidding me, Michelle! I was thinking about asking who will compile the songs to a cd and give it to those who posted here. I was just too busy working! Weird..
